How to Help Support Your Child’s Learning and Development This Summer During COVID-19
Due to the current pandemic, you may be concerned that your plans for your child regarding summer school or camp to help avoid the ‘summer slide’ are no longer possible, and you may find that summer learning is a challenging endeavour for parents, especially those who need to work.
However, there are several simple steps you can take to help support your child’s development during this summer:
1. Maintain a Routine
When kids don’t have a routine they can follow, they tend to show more anxiety and will be more likely to misbehave. This summer, involve your child in the process of creating their own daily schedule.
Some tips for creating a routine include:
- Find fun activities they can do throughout the day
- Don’t jam pack the day with too many activities
- Make sure bedtimes and mealtimes are consistent
- Your child’s favourite hobbies and interests are included
Remember: Getting your child’s input for their schedule is key to making them feel empowered and it will ensure they’re more likely to follow the routine.
2. Make Sure Your Child Reads
Reading is key to your child’s language development and it is a nice way to spend time together. If your child reads independently, have them read their favourite book while you are working or reading.
Read with neighbours and friends: Why not try a contactless book swap with your child’s friends by dropping off books they've already read to one another’s doorstep. Just make sure to follow the appropriate physical distancing guidelines.
3. Limit Screen Time
Your child has likely been exposed to significantly more screen time during this time. So make sure to plan fun outdoor activities they can do, including bike riding or soccer. You can also include creative activities in the schedule, such as family game nights, cooking, or painting.
4. Camouflage Lessons by Doing Fun Activities
A good way to keep your child learning is by camouflaging lessons by doing fun, everyday activities. For example:
- Cooking and baking involve chemistry and math skills
- Planting vegetables and observing insects and birds in your garden can be lessons in biology
- Dancing to music can be a great way to get in some much-needed physical activity
These are great activities for your child and provides an excellent opportunity to spend quality time together.
