  • How to Help Your Child Navigate Their Return to Learning During COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a number of challenges for Canadian families, particularly when it comes to childrens’ education. Here are some tips to help your child successfully navigate their return to school during COVID-19.

Since schools closed in March due to COVID-19, many parents have struggled to help their children adjust to distance learning and virtual daycare programs. Some of the challenges faced include:

  • Navigating unfamiliar educational websites
  • Filling gaps left by lack of in-person instruction
  • Supporting children who miss their routine, friends, and teachers
  • Balancing work with parenting

At Grey Matter Montessori, a leading Montessori preschool and daycare in Calgary, we have been offering a virtual daycare/preschool program that helps promote your child’s physical and mental-well-being, develops their sense of independence, and continues to support their academic progress.

How to Help Your Child Successfully Navigate Their Return to Learning

Whether your child has started virtual daycare once again, or they have some form of in-person instruction, this new school year is clearly not the traditional back-to-school experience we know.

If you are feeling concerned as a parent, here are some tips to help your child successfully and safely navigate their return to learning:

1. Teach them mask etiquette. It’s important to teach your child how to wear and remove their masks properly. Encourage them to practice this for short periods at home and when they are out in public, gradually increasing the amount of time they can tolerate a mask. Remember to plan to supply your child with extra masks for school.

2. Promote good hygiene. Encourage hand washing often and make it fun by singing a song or telling a story to your child while they wash. Make sure to establish consistent house rules about hand washing, including every time a family member comes home from outside, after going to the bathroom, and before/after eating.

3. Start socializing again with other children. During this time of staying at home, you may have halted playdates and socializing in person with your child’s friends. While this was essential for health reasons and to slow the spread of the virus, now may be the time to reorient your child to socializing in a safe way.

4. Prevent separation anxiety. After spending so much time at home, your child might feel nervous about going back to school and being apart from family members. Make sure to have conversations about your child’s concerns and try to find ways to make your child feel connected to home, such as giving them a family photo to take to school, or putting notes in their lunchbox.

5. Make time at the end of the day. Now that your child has returned to school, be ready for some behaviour changes, such as acting out or unusual quietness. Take some time in the evening to listen to your child recount events and feelings from the day, as this will help comfort them and provide a safe environment for them to express their concerns.

6. Get back on a regular sleep schedule. During the pandemic, your child was likely going to bed later and getting up later than usual. Now that they are back to learning, make sure you follow a consistent bedtime routine and avoid all electronics in the evening.

Another shout out to an amazing school here in #Calgary! Our youngest son goes to this school and he loves it! In just 5 short months his knowledge has grown, his confidence is starting to bloom and he just loves learning! The personal touch the wonderful teachers provide is certainly priceless!  What I love is that when you walk in there, there is always calming music playing softly, and everyone is smiling and friendly
