  • 3 Back To School Safety Tips To Follow During The COVID-19 Pandemic

As the summer winds down, parents and children are preparing to return back to school, but you may be hesitant due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are five back to school safety tips to teach your child to keep their health and well-being protected.

With the start of a new school year, parents might be hesitant to send their children back to school due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, when you are sure that it is safe for your little one, sending them back to preschool is important because schools provide much more than just academics. It is a space where your child can:

  • Learn social and emotional skills
  • Get exercise
  • Build long lasting friendships
  • Gain the learning support that can not be provided by online programs
  • Grow their science, math, and writing skills

Back to School Safety Tips During COVID-19

As a parent, one of the biggest challenges you are managing right now is how to let your child safely be a child during the COVID-19 pandemic. To start with, here are some helpful back to school safety tips that can protect your child’s health and well-being:

1. Reinforce Everyday Precautions

As you prepare to send your child back to the classroom, make sure to reinforce the everyday COVID-19 precautions he/she must keep in mind, as well as why taking these steps is so important.

  • Social distancing. Remind your child to reduce close contact with other students as this will limit their risk of getting sick via the infectious respiratory droplets someone with COVID-19 can release when talking or coughing. Also remind your child not to share any food or drinks with their friends.

  • Wearing a mask. This can help contain any potentially infectious respiratory droplets that may be released when talking or coughing.

  • Washing hands. Washing hands limits the risk of getting sick by touching a contaminated surface and then spreading the virus to your eyes, nose, or mouth, if you accidentally touch your face.

2. Know What Safety Measures Are Being Implemented in School

It’s extremely important to ensure that your child’s school is implementing every possible measure required to keep your little one safe while learning. Before you send your child back to school, make sure to ask the following questions:

  • What changes have been made to classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, and buses, to ensure social distancing?

  • Will there be a universal masking policy for students (if age appropriate) and staff?

  • Will hand washing opportunities be frequent and will hand sanitizer be available?

  • Is the use of shared equipment being minimized?

  • Have cleaning services increased? How often will high touch surfaces be cleaned and disinfected?

  • Are students or teachers who feel sick required to stay home?

  • What is the plan of action if someone in the school tests positive for COVID-19?

By getting the answers to the above questions before you send your child back to school, you’ll get the peace of mind you require to know your child is in a safe learning environment.

3. Listen to Your Child’s Concerns

During this time, it’s important that your child feels comfortable expressing any concerns or anxiety he/she might have about returning to school during the pandemic, so try to be as prepared as possible to answer any questions.

Whether your child is concerned about having to wear a mask all day or what might happen if there is a confirmed case at school, make sure you listen intently, empathize often, and help your child cope with their feelings in a reassuring manner.

Another shout out to an amazing school here in #Calgary! Our youngest son goes to this school and he loves it! In just 5 short months his knowledge has grown, his confidence is starting to bloom and he just loves learning! The personal touch the wonderful teachers provide is certainly priceless!  What I love is that when you walk in there, there is always calming music playing softly, and everyone is smiling and friendly
