How to Choose The Right Summer Day Camp For Your Kid

Choosing the right summer day camp for your kid can be a daunting task, especially if you’ve never done it before! The good news is, with today’s abundance of camps, there is a type of camp suitable for every child.

Here are some simple tips on how to make the summer day camp selection process more manageable:

1. Think About What Your Child Loves

The goal is to get kids excited about summer by finding programs that speak to their interests. By starting the process with you and your child on the same page, speaking the same language, you’re more likely to find a camp you both love.

Still not sure what your child’s interests are? If you are still learning about your kid’s interests, why not consider a program that offers a variety of activities, as opposed to a single-activity camp.

2. Give Your Child a Say

For the most successful experience, you must include your child in the decision making process. They should have an interest in going to the camp program, and this only comes from feeling ownership in the process.

This doesn’t mean your kid needs to be overwhelmed with excitement, they simply need to have an interest or a spark - something the program staff can foster and build upon.

3. Speak to Other Parents

One of the best ways to get reviews on different summer camps is to talk to parents who have sent their kids to day camps in previous summers. Sometimes, they’ll be able to share their experiences with you and give some insight into how the camp operates and whether or not it was an enriching and educational experience for their child.

4. Pick a Camp That Suits Your Schedule

Before selecting a camp, make sure the program doesn’t interfere with any family vacations or other commitments you and your family have for the summer. If you do happen to have a scheduled conflict with a camp that you are interested in, why not ask the camp director if your child can leave early or take a hiatus for what they need to do?

5. Visit The Camp

Before you register your child to a camp, it’s always a good idea to visit it first to ensure the quality of the program and instruction. In fact, if you can, do this a year in advance so you can get the best idea of how a camp operates when it’s in full swing.

If you do this, you’ll be able to see how the counselors treat the kids and the nuances that take place in the camp day-to-day.
