What Is Montessori Education?

Montessori is a well-known form of education/teaching that combines theory and practice to help guide every child's unique educational journey. The preconceived notions of what traditional education looks like are not present in Montessori classrooms. Instead, the curriculum in Montessori schools is focussed around experiential learning where hands-on independent learning is encouraged. Montessori educators view children as naturally eager learners capable of pursuing their educational paths guided by their individual interests. The Montessori method allows comprehensive learning to help your child develop into an intelligent student, but also a kind, well-rounded human being.

Our team of highly-educated and supportive Montessori educators are experienced and committed to providing your child with the best possible Montessori experience. What is Montessori Education?

The Montessori education program was developed by Italian doctor Maria Montessori that offers a child-centered method of education involving student-led, self-paced yet guided learning in a nurturing environment. The community offers multi-age classrooms that allow children to create natural opportunities of independence and accountability while embracing multi-sensory learning and passionate inquiry. Students are encouraged to follow their curiosities while learning at their own pace to take the time to fully understand concepts and meet individualized learning goals.

5 Subject Areas Of Montessori Education

Practical Life

Practical life activities help students become responsible members of society by helping them learn and express a sense of independence and order. These activities help students learn respect for one another, respect for the environment, and aids in the development of their hand-eye coordination and concentration.

Sensorial Development

This form of child learning involves the refinement of children's senses through repeated manipulation of specifically designed materials. This provides concrete examples of abstract concepts such as color, sounds, texture, and scent.

The Montessori classroom is designed to promote language skills and is encouraged in the classroom by giving students the freedom to speak with their classmates. Oral language skills are incorporated throughout the Montessori curriculum classroom and are refined through games, stories, songs, and poems

Science And Culture

Children can explore concepts relating to Geography, Biology, Zoology, History, Art, and Music. Students are free to explore both in and out of the classroom environment as they learn about the world through problem-solving and trial and error.

There is the very little direction when it comes to mathematics. Teachers are encouraged to guide and counsel students as they learn rather than provide strict learning structures for students. Children will learn important mathematical principles that are designed around the decimal system in a hands-on environment.

Do your Montessori schools run year-round?

No. Our Montessori school year follows the Calgary Board Of Education Modified Calendar. The school year begins mid-August and ends in June.

How is work and development assessed in the Montessori education system?

In the classroom setting, there is a consistent assessment by working and observing your child as they interact with the environment around them. Materials have inherent checks throughout the year that are assessed by a teacher.

Is Montessori effective with highly gifted children?

Yes. Highly gifted children will be able to intellectually learn at their own pace and the program is flexible enough to respond to them as unique individuals.

Another shout out to an amazing school here in #Calgary! Our youngest son goes to this school and he loves it! In just 5 short months his knowledge has grown, his confidence is starting to bloom and he just loves learning! The personal touch the wonderful teachers provide is certainly priceless!  What I love is that when you walk in there, there is always calming music playing softly, and everyone is smiling and friendly
