Teach Your Preschooler These Healthy Habits

Habits are learned young, which is why it’s important to make them healthy ones. Children learn their habits from home, both by what they are directly taught and by what they see the adult in their lives doing. Healthy habits aren’t only concerned with food, although eating habits are very important, they are also concerned with hygiene, physical health, and mental health.

The more your child learns now, the healthier they’ll be when they get older. By then, not only will these habits be second nature, they will have grown up treating their bodies and minds well.

10 Healthy Habits Your Preschooler Can Learn Now

Be Active

Kids are exposed to technology at increasingly younger ages and screen time often means being sedentary for long periods of time. To keep kids healthy, make sure to provide opportunities for lots of energetic activities and encourage your child to run, jump, dance, and get outside.

Drink Water

It’s such a simple habit to keep up once it’s established but it’s so important. Proper hydration is vital to overall health, so make sure your kids get water instead of juice or pop. If your child doesn’t like it try adding just a splash of juice or add slices of fruit like lemons or strawberries to give it a flavour boost.

Eat The Rainbow

Fruit is nature’s candy, including in the vivid colours it comes in. All the different colours of fruit and vegetables carry different vitamins and nutrients, so make sure to feed your child an assortment of them and include them as a part of every meal or as a good snack.

Eat Breakfast

It’s true what they say: breakfast is the most important meal of the day. By eating breakfast, kids get fuel to make it through the day, give their brain a boost, and fight illness.

Read Every Day

It’s not just important that your child learns how to read, it’s important that they learn to like it. For some children, it comes naturally but for others, it doesn’t which is why you should go to the library to pick out books and then read them together. When you make it a special outing and let them choose which books they want, reading becomes exciting and interesting.

Stay Clean

Your child should get used to washing their hands every time they use the washroom, even if they don’t think their hands are dirty. There are little particles that get on hands when going to the washroom and learning that from a young age encourages handwashing.

Brush Your Teeth

You’re never too young for dental hygiene. Building a routine of brushing three times a day will lead to healthier teeth and gums for life.

Get Good Rest

Sleep is so important to health! It helps memory, the immune system, and mood, to name just a few. Your child should be getting between 8 and 10 hours of sleep each night.

Stop the spread of germs

Schools and daycare are a breeding ground for germs, but you can teach your child to do their part by covering their mouth with the inside of their elbow when they cough or sneeze

Avoid Junk Food

Not only is junk food loaded with unhealthy fats, salts, and sugars, foods such as chips are often not filling or nutritious. Fatty and sugary foods also lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure in later life. Keeping children away from these unhealthy foods makes them crave them less and encourages healthy eating in the child.

FAQs

Q: My child doesn’t like fruit, how am I supposed to get them to eat it?
A: There are so many types of fruit, your child will likely like some of them. Try some fruits you don’t normally have in your house and see which ones they like.  Importantly, make sure you eat the fruit as well so your child sees how yummy it is.

Q: Is there evidence to support the difference in the Montessori method?
A: Yes. Studies support the finding that Montessori students are more likely to succeed in their education, careers, and find happiness in their lives.

Q: How can I teach my child healthy habits if they’re out of the house for preschool and daycare?
A: Even if you’re not around your child all the time, you are still who they see most and feel closest to, so your behaviour matters most. Make sure to encourage them to make healthy choices and also make sure to make your own healthy choices and lead by example. When your children are at Grey Matter Montessori for preschool, they’ll also be learning healthy habits from their trained and professional teachers. Everyone at Grey Matter wants what’s best for you child and they’ll make sure they’re setting them up with healthy habits!
