Inspire Your Preschooler's Creativity With These Tips

Creativity is innate in children but it can become stifled as they age and are taught to act and think in more structured ways. Creativity needs to be encouraged for the sake of your child’s enjoyment and so they can feel more self confident, motivated, and better at problem solving. Creativity has many benefits that will help your child grow as a person and excel as a member of society. Creative activities tend to encourage an understanding of motor function and body movement. If you want to foster your child’s creativity, here are some tips to help you spark your child’s interest.

6 Ways To Inspire Creativity In Your Preschooler

  1. Encourage Questions. Children are naturally inquisitive, sometimes so much so that it can be hard to get them to stop asking questions. Try not to discourage this natural curiosity. If you can’t answer your child’s question, suggest that you look it up together or use a smart device to let your child look it up for themselves. When you go to appointments such as the dentist and the optometrist, get your child to ask any questions they have about that topic. If your child has a tendency not to ask questions, then you can ask them and encourage them to answer. Since your child is not able to research (or at least not without your help) they may come up with some very creative explanations.
  2. Present Them With Many Different Activities. There are so many creative activities in the world and you don’t know which ones your child will enjoy, so try to expose them to all different kinds. Get your kids to sing, dance, draw, tell stories, or do music, puppetry, or science experiments; try many different outlets so your child can find what interests them. As a bonus, new creative hobbies are also a great educational way to keep them entertained.
  3. Don’t Make Them Do Activities They Don’t Like. If your child doesn’t show interest in an activity or if they show active dislike for it, don’t force them to continue or they may build resentment towards that activity. Instead, try to encourage your child to pursue other hobbies similar to ones they already like. For example, if your child enjoys building with blocks they may like other hands-on activities like sculpting with playdough.
  4. Let Them Be Bored. Modern kids have a lot to do and a lot to entertain them; between school, extracurricular activities, chores, and screen time, there’s hardly any boredom to be had. The best child creativity comes from boredom, since the child wants to stay entertained and has to come up with a way to do that, so try to make some time for it. A good way to do this is to reduce your child’s screen time to let them be bored and encourage them to find solutions to boredom.
  5. Make A Creative Space. It could be a room or a corner of a room, either way try giving your child an area with creative opportunities, like a space to play with their toys or dress up clothes. It’s good to have some form of separation of areas for play versus for sleep or school so that your child can compartmentalize areas and tasks.
  6. Let Them Make Mistakes. Play is a space for freedom and that means making mistakes. Try not to correct those mistakes, as it will make the play feel constricted and not as focused on creativity. Instead, ask your child about what they’re doing and let them launch into an explanation without interruption.
