  • 5 Surprising Aspects of Montessori Preschools You Might Not Know About

Are you thinking about enrolling your child in a Montessori school in Calgary? Here are five facts about the Montessori preschool education system that you might not know about and how it can benefit your little one’s social, emotional, and academic development.

The Montessori method of learning is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to the traditional schooling method, and for a very good reason. Montessori preschools in Calgary aim to foster your child’s confidence in themselves and the world around them.

In addition to this, by attending a Montessori preschool, your child will build key skills, including:

  • Enhanced creativity
  • Mental flexibility
  • Improved memory and concentration
  • Greater sense of independence
  • Teamwork and emotional intelligence

5 Facts About the Montessori Education Program That You Might Not Know About

Montessori preschools are unlike any other preschools: they are filled with a sense of serenity and peace, inviting materials, and focused students. The benefits of attending a Montessori daycare/preschool in Calgary start at a young age and if fostered, they can have far reaching and positive effects for the rest of your child’s life.

To help you make the decision about whether attending a Calgary Montessori school is the best choice for your child, here are five surprising facts about this education system you might not know about:

  1. Children choose their lessons. In the traditional classroom, children work with a curriculum that is taught by a teacher. On the other hand, Montessori teachers act as guides and children are free to choose their own materials and work with them for as long as they wish. This builds independence, self-discipline, and the ability to concentrate.

  2. There are no grades. Instead of working towards letter grades, children learn by mastery. They learn concepts at the very basic level and keep progressing higher. This means they don’t feel the pressure or stress to study for an exam. Children pass from one stage of independence to a higher one by means of their own activity and their own effort, which constitutes greater inner evolution.

  3. Children work on their manners. The Montessori education system places a high value on social/emotional learning and developing the whole child. Children will learn how to be polite and basic manners, such as how to greet one another, how to solve a disagreement, how to respect one another, and how to clean up after themselves.

  4. Children learn from their peers. Montessori classrooms have mixed ages. This intentional practice is used so that children can learn from their peers, which happens to be one of the most powerful ways children learn. Once children have mastered a work, they can guide another child in the classroom, or vice versa.

  5. There are no desks. Instead of desks in a Montessori classroom, children sit at small tables or on the floor with work mats. This extra space allows children to move throughout the classroom with ease and to independently choose their work for the day.
